This 70 Hemi Cuda Convertible is one of
fourteen produced. It is equipped with the infamous 426 Hemi Motor
also known as the “Elephant” motor. There is a certain aura or
mystique surrounding Hemi cars such as this one. Mopar enthusiasts,
as well as most car enthusiasts; are drawn to them like a magnet.
When you open the hood of a Hemi car and reveal the massive Hemi
heads with the spark plugs in the center of the valve covers, plus
the dual Carburetors on top
of the intake manifold; it is a sight that most will never forget.
The Hemi motor in the 60’s and early 70’s
was the motor of choice for a significant number of the winning top
Drag Racers. In contrast to the race versions, the street Hemi was
only rated at 425 horsepower. Chrysler de-tuned this awesome motor
in order to make it sane for street use. The result was that they
de-tuned it so severely that they created an injustice to one of the
most incredible motors ever produced. It was hard to make one of
these street Hemis perform at its peak. This was to due the large
amount of CFM from the dual carbs, with a somewhat small cam, and
then trying to force it all out a somewhat restrictive exhaust. In
other words this motor was never unleashed to its full potential for
the street.
This 70 Hemi Cuda Convertible was first owned
by a Chrysler engineer out of Detroit Michigan. It then made its way
through a several owners before coming a part of Kevin’s
collection. It has been featured in magazines and books such as
“American Muscle”. Recently, it has just come back from a
two-year restoration.
