The Hemi Cuda! Combining the most popular
body style that Chrysler ever designed, with the most impressive
motor of that era; was a combination that some considered second
to none. Imagine driving this car on the street in 1970, having a
Hemi motor that in its full race trim was capable of winning most
NHRA Drag Races. Still to this day it remains as one of the top
icons of all muscle cars.
The first Hemi cars produced prior to the
Hemi Cudas came into existence in order to qualify for race in
NASCAR. Chrysler had to offer the Hemi engine in regular
production cars and make them available to the public. But they
didn’t dare deliver these cars with the full race version, and
detuned them to 425 HP. This 425 HP rating was only at 5,000 RPM.
But the Hemi was easily capable of living at 6,000 RPM where the
dyno registered closer to 500 HP.
The Massive Hemi Heads with the pair of 550
CFM (1100 CFM total) Carter carburetors setting between them
resulted in a nickname for the Hemi, the “Elephant Motor”.
When these Hemi carbs were topped with the Shaker Hood’s air
breather assembly, you not only had something that was unique in
design, but also a cold air induction system that actually worked.
The term “Shaker” was derived from the breather on the Hemi
vibrating as it protruded through the opening in the hood.
There were 284 Hemi Cuda four speed cars
produced. If it were 1970 all over again, this is one of the cars
that Kevin would order, exactly as this one was delivered.
