The 1970 SS 454 LS6 Chevelle has been voted the most popular musclecar by readers in a couple of Musclecar Review magazine surveys. Its attractive and tough looking body style with its dual stripe package and cowl induction hood was a winner. It combined looks, high performance, and affordability.
By merely checking the RPO option LS6 and forking out $263.30, the 454 jumped from 360 horsepower to 450 horsepower. This gave an increase of 90 horsepower -- was that a bargain or what? At 450 horsepower the 454 LS6 motor was the highest advertised horsepower rating by Chevrolet put on the street for public use. The 1970 production model year is considered by some to be the last of the musclecar era due to government regulations and the lower compression ratios in 1971. Insurance companies likewise added to the demise of high performance cars by charging stiff premiums for higher horsepower ratings.
Approximately twenty to thirty LS6 convertibles were produced. There were several thousand hardtop LS6's sold. This rare color of white with black stripe LS6 convertible is heavily documented with three build sheets. We even found one on the gas tank which is not common, except on Corvettes. It retains the original owner 1970 title, registration, invoice, and financing agreement. The entire drive train is original as well as every part, piece, nut and bolt being original as the car had never been touched prior to its restoration. Although it was a close call as to restore or not, the ageing process had taken its toll. Therefore it was restored instead of kept as an unrestored survivor. The impeccable restoration was done by Gary Thurlow and Mark Marsh in Wisconsin.
This LS6 convertible left the factory as white with white interior, black convertible top and black stripes. Its options include Super Sport 454, LS6 450HP, M22 4-speed, 12 bolt 3.31 positraction, F41 special suspension, cowl air induction hood, power brakes, front disc brakes, power steering, power convertible top, hood pins, dual exhaust with chrome tips, rally sport wheels, F70x14 raised white letter tires, HD battery, remote mirror, full instrument package including tach, electric clock, AM radio, convenience light package, tinted glass, windshield antenna and other standard features.
